What is Azure IoT Plug and Play?

It is a capability provided by Microsoft that simplifies the process of connecting IoT devices and integrating them with the Azure cloud.

Device manufacturers can preconfigure their devices and expose critical data to the cloud. This enables developers to easily discover, connect, and interact with these devices without the need for custom code or device-specific APIs.

IoT Plug and Play provides a standard data model for devices, making it easy to build solutions that can work with a wide range of devices from different manufacturers. Developers can use this data model to build applications that can monitor and control devices, collect telemetry data, and perform other actions based on the device capabilities.

This helps us simplify the development process for IoT solutions, reducing the time and effort required to connect and integrate devices with the cloud which otherwise can be time consuming and may become untenable over time.

"To make IoT Plug and Play work with Azure Digital Twins, you define models and interfaces using the Digital Twins Definition Language (DTDL) V2."

Adoption

There’s currently over 350+ devices registered with the Azure Certified Device Program and we expect to see this rise as more manufactures look to certify their devices with the Azure cloud.

The purpose of this certification program is to make sure devices that send telemetry work with IoT Hub, a service within Azure that acts as a messaging center that manages the communication of data from devices to IoT applications.

Once a device has been certified and is able to work with IoT Hub, we integrate these devices into the cloud and utilise other Azure services to create an end-to-end solution. From data collection, to 3D representation of an entire building or environment, we integrate the full solution for our customers.

IoT Edge Devices

You can deploy Azure services and solution-specific code to on-premises devices. Using IoT Edge devices to perform compute and analytics tasks on data, before it’s sent to the cloud, can help reduce the cost associated with data egress whilst bringing the power of the cloud inside your physical network.

Moreover, only sending over the anomalies to the cloud, can help reduce the volume of data leaving the physical environment, helping to increase time to insight and reliance on network performance.
